E249 Frank Gone!

·1 hr 2 min·5 clips

Thomas Frank is sacked after eight months, leaving Tottenham 16th with just 12 fit players and facing a relegation battle.

This bonus midweek episode of the Dr. Tottenham podcast is a reaction to the sacking of manager Thomas Frank. The hosts—Tim, Vas, Andy, and Billy—immediately frame the situation: Frank is gone after eight months, with Tottenham 16th in the Premier League, having won only two home league games, and with just 12 fit senior players. The panel begins by summarizing Frank's tenure in five words or fewer, with responses like "Promised much, delivered fuck all" and "A complete waste of time." Billy shares his personal moment of learning the news on a train from Glasgow, highlighting the emotional fan response. The discussion then turns to why Frank was sacked. Andy argues it was two months too late, linking the delay to Tottenham now being in a genuine relegation battle, with the gap to teams like Forest narrowing. Vas points to the disastrous performance against Newcastle, where the team looked like "11 strangers on the field," as the breaking point. The hosts debate whether fan chants for Mauricio Pochettino and booing during that game directly influenced the board's decision. They criticize the board's handling, particularly the January transfer window, where Frank was neither backed nor sacked, leaving the club in a difficult position. Stories emerge post-sacking about Frank being distant from players and overly focused on Arsenal as a blueprint, which the panel sees as a sign the job was too big for him. The conversation shifts to what comes next. Billy argues it's a tricky decision between an interim or permanent manager, noting the relegation threat makes an interim risky. Names floated include Ryan Mason, Robbie Keane, Harry Redknapp, and even Sam Allardyce, with skepticism about most. Pochettino is discussed extensively as the ideal long-term option, with Billy noting his deliberate podcast appearance and ongoing affinity for Tottenham. However, Andy warns about nostalgia being a "hell of a drug" and the need for substantial financial backing if Pochettino returns. The hosts also touch on the injury crisis, the potential use of youth players, and the broader structural issues at the club. They express worry about relegation but hope a new manager bounce might help. The episode ends with breaking news about a shortlist including Zerbi, Pochettino, and Robbie Keane, and a mention of Ange Postecoglou's upcoming interview, highlighting the timing and ongoing chaos at Tottenham.
