Why the Resurrection Matters [Philippians 3:1-16]

·40 min·4 clips

Pastor Dave leads a call-and-response: 'Christ is risen,' and the congregation replies, 'He is risen indeed.'

The episode is a sermon by Pastor Dave McMurry from Grace Bible Church in Killeen, Texas, focusing on the significance of Jesus' resurrection. He begins with a call-and-response ritual, 'Christ is risen,' to engage the congregation. The pastor explains that the resurrection matters because Jesus died for sins and rose to impart righteousness, referencing Romans 4:24 and the concept of double imputation. He then contrasts two biblical figures: Mary Magdalene, who represents those broken by suffering, and Paul of Tarsus, who represents those confident in success. Mary, healed of seven evil spirits, witnessed Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, becoming the first witness after hearing Jesus call her name. Paul, a Pharisee and persecutor of Christians, encountered the resurrected Jesus and transformed, considering his past achievements as 'rubbish.' The sermon delves into Philippians 3, where Paul discusses rejecting confidence in the flesh and trusting in Christ. Pastor Dave outlines three main points: resurrection power helps find faith by shifting confidence from self to Jesus, conquers suffering through daily service and love, and enables spiritual growth by forgetting the past and pressing forward. He uses analogies like driving with a rearview mirror to illustrate forgetting shame or success. The sermon includes practical advice, such as joining Bible studies and accountability groups, and emphasizes that Christianity uniquely balances human brokenness and divine love. It concludes with a prayer for listeners to hear Jesus' voice and trust in his resurrection power.
