An imposter seizes the TARDIS by tricking the Doctor, declaring himself the new master of time and space.
The episode opens with the Doctor's TARDIS being hijacked by an imposter who tricks the Doctor into linking with a psychic circuit, allowing the imposter to take control. The imposter declares himself the new Doctor and master of the TARDIS. Bess and the Doctor are separated as rifts in time and space appear, threatening Earth. Bess encounters the imposter, who claims to be the real Doctor, while the Doctor is elsewhere trying to fix the TARDIS. They become trapped in a time stream where their perceptions of reality differ—Bess sees a forest, while the imposter sees Gallifrey. Reality shimmers and breaks down, creating illusions like Cybermen and Daleks. The imposter reveals he is a future companion of the Doctor who left him after learning the Doctor's dark past names, such as 'Storm' and 'The Destroyer', accusing him of destroying worlds. Bess's faith in the Doctor is shaken. To close the rifts, they use a focusing jewel from the TARDIS's Time Rotor, which requires a sacrifice. The Doctor volunteers, implying he has a plan involving the Time Lords. After the rifts are closed, Bess receives a psychic message from a regenerated Doctor who reflects on his past life and warns of a terrifying future. The Doctor and Bess reunite, change clothes, and plan their next adventure. They are watched by Chancellor Cailan and Azale, who vow to capture the Doctor next time.
