E50 | From Dietitian to Running Coach: Part One with Rachel Laymon

·37 min·2 clips
"You're the human wearing the gadget" is Rachel Laymon's rule for using HRV, heart rate, and sleep data.
Casey is on his own today. He brings in Rachel Lehman as a local running coach, dietitian, and certified personal trainer, complete with the very Hobby Jogger moment of nearly second-guessing her name on mic. They begin close to home. Rachel confirms she is in the Akron area, around Portage Lakes, and has been part of the PLX Running Club for years. The conversation stays loose, but it lands in practical places. When HRV, autonomic nervous system signals, and time between heartbeats come up, Rachel keeps turning the tech talk into something runners can use. Watch numbers can help, sure. They just do not mean much without the rest of the picture: pace, weather, stress, sleep, and whether life has been remotely normal. Casey follows the runner-watch rabbit hole, as expected. Rachel gives the data some credit, but she treats HRV as a trend to check against how you actually feel. That is the part that feels useful. If an easy pace suddenly takes a higher heart rate and the weather is not doing anything weird, the watch may be catching something. Life still gets a vote. Kids, extracurriculars, late work, travel, and broken sleep all hit training before most runners want to admit it. Then Garmin catches some heat. Rachel jokes that the watch needs settings for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and young kids waking you up all night, because a bad sleep score can be weirdly demoralizing. Nutrition slips in too. Near the end, purple rice becomes Casey's new pre-race carb, partly because it is soft. Rachel rolls with it and frames rice as a solid option, while Casey does the quick-search runner thing and compares it roughly to brown rice. They run out of time, so Casey makes the Rachel conversation a two-parter. It fits. There are clearly more Rachel tangents coming.
