55 | Proper Nutrition for Distance Runners

·46 min·1 clip
Coach Chris Knighton opens the first episode of 2023 by making nutrition part of the running conversation right away. He starts with recovery. He keeps coming back to the idea that many committed runners, especially working adults, do not have a hard-work problem so much as a recovery problem, and that distinction shapes the whole show. That matters. Training only turns into gains when the body gets enough support between hard efforts, and he treats nutrition as one of the main ways to provide that support. So he gets practical. He lays out an overall healthy diet for distance runners with a simple macro frame, up to 70 percent carbohydrates, 15 percent protein, and 15 percent fat. Then he names the foods. Colorful fruits and vegetables, grains, and beans get the strongest emphasis, while processed food, meat, and dairy can fit in small amounts and should not take over the diet. Water gets its own reminder. He says runners can top up before heading out when they need to, and he tells them to drink water as soon as they return rather than trying to earn anything by being thirsty. He calls that idea outdated and dangerous. After that, he narrows in. Calcium and vitamin D are paired together because they help build strong bones under the repeated impact of running, and he connects that directly to stress reactions and stress fractures. Iron rounds out the list. He recommends paying attention to it as part of overall athlete health and suggests asking a doctor for a comprehensive blood panel during a physical so those levels can be checked properly. The message keeps circling back to the same thing: runners get better when they balance hard work with recovery and feed that process with habits they can actually keep. It is a basics-first reset.

A steady coach's take on fueling, recovery, and the bones that keep runners running.

Proper nutrition is treated as part of recovery, not a side note, and that framing suits an episode that keeps circling back to the gap many dedicated runners live with: the work is hard, but the payoff still has to be absorbed.
