The $340 Bike Race?! Remco's Masterclass & UCI Dirty Secrets | The Packfiller Ep. 515

February 18, 2026·1 hr 21 min·7 clips
Pat Bulger argues that a $10,000 bike that hurts to ride is just the world's most expensive coat rack.
Cyclists are ridiculous. The cold open starts with the old bike person problem: everyone wants grams, bearings, and dignity, while somehow living with a fit that makes backs, hands, and knees file complaints. Then the garage scene gets late. A bottom bracket will not budge at 2 a.m. in Spokane, so the episode settles into that very Packfiller mix of bike stubbornness, tired spouses, and bad decisions made near tools. The actual racing talk sneaks in from the side. Someone checks a license renewal, sees upgrade points still sitting there, and has to figure out where they came from years after the race. Points do not age out, which sends the table into a very specific category-status spiral. One rider admits he is Cat 3 after decades spent higher up and is not exactly sprinting to move back. Cat 3 gets a real defense. It sounds like the lane where the racing is still fast, but you are not tossed straight into the pro 1/2 blender. Tour de Bloom becomes the test case: Cat 1/2 masters sounds nasty, Cat 3/4 still sounds quick, and hope survives by a thread. The group also hits the sketchy part of 40-plus Cat 4s and 5s. Not weak riders, necessarily. More like riders who show up from Zwift with FTP numbers near 300 and not enough road sense for a crowded group. That lands because it feels painfully believable. Indoor power does not make someone predictable in a pack. The rest stays loose, with cereal, studio thanks, sponsor bits, and one doomed reach for listeners under twenty. Nobody is trying to sound slick. That is the charm: real amateur racing knowledge, middle-aged vanity, quick self-correction, and enough nonsense to keep the wheels from feeling too straight.

As heard by us

A sharp, shop-talk tour through fit, category ego, and the hard math of upgrading.

Packfiller spends much of the hour on the plain math of cycling status: license points, old race results, cat three versus cat two, and whether the jump is worth the effort.
