Surf ski technique, one stroke element at a time.
The gist
Paddle 2 Fitness is a surf ski coaching podcast led by Julian Norton-Smith, who isolates one element of the stroke at a time: the catch, the exit, rotation, leverage. He talks positions through in close physical detail and pushes back on familiar cues such as spearing the blade or pulling with the arm.

About Paddle 2 Fitness
Paddle 2 Fitness is a surf ski technique podcast hosted by coach Julian Norton-Smith. It has one main job: making the paddling stroke understandable one element at a time. A run of recent titles shows the pattern, from '#68.Longer Exits' to '#66.Holding Opposite Rotation' to '#64.The Power of Paddling Leverage. What You Need to Know!' The discussion stays physical and specific. Norton-Smith places the top hand in line with the opposite shoulder, calls the moment the shaft reaches throat height the transition point, and follows the connection from the hand through the forearm and shoulder into the rib cage. On grip, he narrows attention to the forefingers at the end of the top-arm push. On the exit, he contrasts a top arm driven too straight, which brings the hand out early, with one rotated too far, which leaves the exit hand behind the body. That second position, he says, is generally when paddlers fall in. The show questions stock advice. One episode sets out to retire the idea of spearing the paddle into the water, arguing for a placement with a drop that loads the blade faster. Another argues against thinking of the stroke as a pull, since pulling tends to become a bottom-arm effort that disconnects the power available from hip and body rotation. Analogy carries weight in these explanations. Rotation that fires before the blade is fully submerged is likened to two cogs meshing out of time, grinding instead of driving. Some episodes grow out of the show's social media activity. A post about opposite rotation drew a wave of blunt and constructive replies, and a fuller explanation followed on the podcast. One episode is introduced by Gary, who says he has followed the Peak Performance Program for some eight years. A recorded intro describes Norton-Smith's background in elite paddling and in coaching across sprint canoeing, surf lifesaving, adventure racing and surf ski. The show is not strictly clinical. Norton-Smith has used an episode to talk about his own mental health after an incident, and another mentions a heart check he had after an event. Several episodes close with a pitch for the paid Peak Performance Program, and one offers a 28-day free trial. For a first listen, '#67.Stop Spearing Your Paddle' shows the contrarian streak plainly, while '#68.Longer Exits' suits anyone who keeps tipping over at the back end of the stroke.
Made for: Suits a surf ski paddler who trains solo or in a small squad without a coach and wants technique explained in enough physical detail to try on the water. Also fits a paddler chasing a specific fault, such as a short exit or a weak catch.
What sets it apart: It narrows each discussion to one mechanical fault and openly challenges stock cues like spearing the blade or pulling with the arm. The fixes come through precise body landmarks and analogies such as meshing cogs.
In their own words
For over 20 years, Paddle 2 Fitness as helped paddlers become more efficient in their technique and helped educated them on polarising training methods. In these podcasts, we aim to improve paddlers technique by breaking each part down so you can easily understand and put into practice. We also discuss MAF and 80/20 training principles. We will have you paddling faster, paddling more efficiently and have more fun on the water.
