In their own words

Terri and C.J. are first and foremost educators passionate about the Viking Age and Viking history. Theirs was a meeting foretold in the myths of old. Both are historians of Viking history, both live in Oregon in the U.S., and both share the same birthday. It seemed only natural they team up for something epic. The Norns have woven this fate. vikingology.substack.com

Short reviews from the PlayNext desk, based on the episodes we processed.

Catching up with C.J. and Terri

A loose Vikingology check-in connects milestone talk with courses, guest previews, and Viking law.

Vikingology uses a filler episode as a loose but useful look at the work gathering around the show. CJ Adrian and Terry Barnes mark more than two years on air, note that they are nearing 50 episodes, and describe a podcast shaped by curiosity rather than a fixed plan.

Myth and belief in the Viking Age and beyond

Ragnarok becomes a question of whether repeated cosmic patterns still leave room for choice.

This Vikingology episode frames Ragnarok as a story about time as well as cosmic collapse. C.J. Adrian and Terry Barnes speak with Professor Carolyn Larrington, a scholar of Old English and Old Norse and a research fellow at St.

News and Musings

A relaxed return through Iceland, Hastings, a Viking artifact, and the uncertain geography of Bretland.

Vikingology returns in an easy conversational mode as CJ Adrian and Terry Barnes move from birthday banter and travel updates into historical speculation.

The Headless Norsemen

A DNA match between Viking skeletons in southern England and Denmark turns a mass burial into a story of kinship, defeat, and power.

Vikingology Podcast centers on a mass burial in southern England, treating the dead as probable battle losers whose treatment seems meant to carry a message of defeat and dishonour.

The Art of Viking Death

A careful, tactile discussion of Viking burial posture, chamber graves, and the limits of interpretation.

Vikingology turns Viking burial into a question of space, evidence, and interpretation. CJ Adrian and Terry Barnes welcome back Kevin and Devin, living history experts and experimental archaeologists, for a discussion of their collaborative book and the images around it.

Monarchs and Hydrarchs

A clear look at Viking groups in Frankia, with hierarchy, trade, and group identity in focus.

Monarchs and Hydrarchs stays close to the record and keeps its focus on Vikings in Frankia as organized groups rather than lone raiders. It follows hierarchy, trade, political activity, and the ways Viking alliances could hold together for a time and then break apart again.

A Norse is a Norse, of course. Or is it?

Fantasy, metallurgy, and Viking Age ideas meet in a conversation that stays lively as it moves.

A former FBI cyber intelligence analyst turned full-time fantasy author joins Vikingology, and the hosts use Greg Amato's trilogy to move cleanly between saga-inspired fiction, story rules, and Viking Age ideas.

Viking Ghost Stories

Ghost stories, ritual, and the limits of what Viking sources can support.

Viking ghost stories provide the hook, but the stronger draw is how the discussion keeps circling back to a world where magic, ritual, and ordinary life are hard to pull apart. CJ Adrian and Terry Barnes bring in Dr.
