Calm investing judgment for imperfect markets.

The gist

Money for the Rest of Us treats investing as a sequence of imperfect choices, not a search for the single best answer. David Stein moves from market data, personal examples, and listener notes toward portfolios a real person might actually hold through uncertainty.

About Money for the Rest of Us

Money for the Rest of Us is an investing show for people who want decisions to survive contact with real life. It is calm, but not casual. David Stein often begins with a phrase, a trip, a market event, a listener note, or a portfolio problem, then follows the thread until the practical choice becomes clearer. The show resists the fantasy of a perfect portfolio. Good enough is a recurring ethic. That idea appears in episodes about lifestyle funds, risk parity, AI analysis, and the ordinary need for slack when life refuses to optimize neatly. Recent conversations have ranged across managed futures, endowment returns, asset location, catastrophe bonds, private credit, Federal Reserve projections, oil moves, inflation, and the possibility of another financial crisis. The details can get technical. Credit spreads, standard deviation, Monte Carlo simulations, tax-adjusted income, volatility equalization, leverage costs, and expected returns all appear without being treated as decorative expertise. Stein usually slows down enough to explain why a statistic matters and where it can mislead. He is especially interested in the distance between a clean model and an investor's actual behavior. A strategy may look elegant, yet still fail if its fees, leverage, turnover, tax treatment, or emotional demands make it hard to keep. That is where the show is strongest. It brings institutional-style questions back to personal use. A medical malpractice insurer in Coral Gables becomes a way to think about after-tax returns. A Florida rainstorm leads into severe convective storms, insurance risk, and catastrophe bonds. A year-end break in Tucson becomes a reflection on routines, intentions, overconfidence, and investment opportunities that almost made sense but did not. AI is treated with the same caution. It can save time, categorize holdings, build spreadsheets, and help run simulations, but the inputs and interpretation still belong to a person with judgment. The show also keeps returning to uncertainty in public markets, especially when geopolitical events, inflation expectations, and bond yields begin to move together. It does not offer urgency as a substitute for preparation. Its rhythm is closer to thinking at a desk than reacting on a trading floor. The result is useful for investors who want to understand the assumptions behind their choices, not just copy a portfolio allocation.

Made for: For self-directed investors and financially curious people who can handle technical detail when it is tied to clear practical choices. It especially suits people who want to think through risk, taxes, diversification, and market uncertainty without hype.

What sets it apart: The show connects institutional portfolio habits to ordinary investing decisions without pretending the math removes uncertainty. Its signature move is turning complex strategies into a judgment question: can someone understand it, afford it, and stick with it?

Best episodes of Money for the Rest of Us

Short reviews from the PlayNext desk, based on the episodes we processed.

There Is No Perfect Portfolio. Just Good EnoughApr 15, 2026

A steady argument for a portfolio that is good enough to stick with.

David Stein starts from the old sense of perfect as complete, then uses that idea to frame a plain argument about investing: portfolios do not offer certainty, only tradeoffs.

AI Is Changing Me - and the Case for Good EnoughMar 11, 2026

AI, portfolio tradeoffs, and the case for good enough.

David Stein treats AI as part of the episode's argument, not just a side topic. He brings in recent positive and negative experiences, then uses them to frame a plain case for good enough.

What Will Drive Financial Markets in 2026—and How to Make It Your Best YearJan 14, 2026

A calm year-end market reflection that values judgment over prediction.

David Stein uses a year-end reflection to move between personal routine, portfolio review, and the harder problem of staying rational when markets and intentions get noisy. The episode works best when it treats investing as a habit of paying attention, not a prediction contest.

Burnout, Breaks, and the Courage to Spend with David BachNov 19, 2025

A retirement conversation that argues for spending sooner, not just saving longer.

David Stein uses David Bach's story to ask a plain but sticky question: when does saving turn into a way of putting off life? The episode moves from Bach's childhood around his father's investment classes to burnout at 46, a mini-sabbatical, and a later move to Florence.

Don’t Take Financial Advice from AIOct 22, 2025

A clear reminder that AI can sound confident and still miss the economics that matter.

David Stein makes his point with a plain car loan comparison, and that helps. He sets up the choice between a 24,000 dollar one-year loan at 10% and a 20-year loan at 1%, then uses Gary Smith's critique and his own test prompt to show how an answer can sound polished while still…

How To Invest During a BubbleAug 20, 2025

A measured look at bubble risk, using valuation data and Meta's Louisiana data-center financing as the concrete case.

David Stein starts with a family story about his son Brett at VidCon, then settles into a careful argument about bubble risk, rich valuations, and the AI narrative driving the market.
