About Mx. Asian American

Mx. Asian American is an interview archive of Asian American lives told through patient, personal conversation. It is less interested in tidy identity statements than in the long route people take toward understanding themselves. Episodes often begin with where a guest grew up. From there, the conversation follows family expectations, school choices, migration, work, money, health, faith, and community. The show can be warm and casual, but it also asks serious questions. Recent guests describe civic engagement work in Texas, the exhaustion that can follow organizing, and the difficulty of staying connected after college. Another conversation follows Hesaliza from a strict Catholic upbringing through travel, wellness practice, nervous-system awareness, and building retreat work. A collaboration episode turns toward queer premodern Asia, asking what historical records do and do not reveal about women, sexuality, gender, and Western interpretation. The show also makes room for artists and builders. Bubu talks about leaving one career path, traveling to Tanzania, and working with students on international film projects. Huiying explains moving from Malaysia to the United States, entering a regulated health-care field, and seeing acupuncture become more mainstream for pain support. Jane speaks as a restaurant baby, poet, memoirist, and hopeful ceramicist, connecting food, place, and memory. Kevin describes a small beef jerky business in Hawaii and the family dynamics around sons and daughters. Brian discusses young fatherhood, San Diego class pressure, and running multiple businesses. Across these stories, Karen's questions keep circling back to the human layer beneath the resume line. What changed? What was hard? What kept someone going? The show's best quality is its willingness to let an answer arrive slowly, with the background still attached.

Made for: For listeners drawn to identity-centered interviews that stay close to lived experience. It especially suits people interested in Asian American community, migration, creative work, organizing, wellness, and family expectations.

What sets it apart: Mx. Asian American stands out through its unhurried attention to transition points rather than headline-driven debate. The show lets guests connect personal biography to culture, politics, health, and work in their own sequence.
