Insider conversations on how pipelines are run and regulated.

The gist

Pipeliners Podcast is an interview-led show about how pipelines are run: the regulation, the control rooms, the conferences and the technology showing up in all of them. Host Russel Treat asks practical questions, gives guests room to explain the background, and turns agency acronyms and compliance categories into plain industry shorthand.

About Pipeliners Podcast

Pipeliners Podcast is about the day-to-day work of pipeline operations: the rules, the control rooms, the software and the people responsible for all of it. Its opening line calls it a place where professionals, 'bubba geeks' and industry insiders share what they know. That mix of expertise and informality describes how it sounds. Russel Treat hosts. The conversations are interview-led and driven by questions. He often opens the same way, asking a guest to say who they are, what they do and how they got into the job. From there the guest gets room to talk. The talk may wander into history, career paths, regulatory philosophy or conference logistics, and those side trips are there because they add context. The vocabulary belongs to insiders: agency names, compliance categories, acronyms. It stays accessible because the show stops to restate those terms in plain industry shorthand. Regulation is the clearest thread in the recent run. In 'Episode 434: PHMSA's Vision and Priorities with Paul Roberti', the guest calls enforcement central to the agency and breaks it into compliance, enforcement and accountability. In a PHMSA enforcement update with Brianne Kurdock and Melanie Lampton, the conversation compares this year's cases with prior years. It reads the numbers as a return to the earlier norm after a pause. Technology is the second thread, and the question is always whether it delivers practical value. Samer El Issa, who describes a background in engineering and industrial automation, talks about using AI to build applications that deliver real operating value. The conference preview with David Murk comes at the same subject from another angle: AI, machine learning and data centers run through the program instead of getting a separate track, because the technology is already everywhere. In a 2026 predictions conversation with Mark LaCour, AI is called a bubble. The dot-com crash comes up as a reminder that the companies left standing afterward were the ones that made a profit. The host can also carry an episode alone. 'Episode 432: Alarm Management - The Most Underestimated Risk in Pipeline Operations with Russel Treat' frames control room alarms as a safeguard for the pipeline and an aid to operators handling abnormal situations. The tone is mostly measured and neutral, with room for warmth, dry humor, friendly ribbing and the occasional grave note. Nothing is played for drama. The conversations keep moving toward what someone in the industry could actually use. For the regulatory side, the obvious place to start is the Paul Roberti conversation. For control room practice, start with the alarm management episode.

Made for: Suits a listener who works around pipeline operations, or wants to understand them seriously, and prefers practical detail on regulation, control rooms and technology over polished storytelling.

What sets it apart: It keeps a narrow trade focus while covering a lot within it: PHMSA enforcement, control room alarm management and practical AI sit side by side. It also stops to translate acronyms and compliance categories into plain industry shorthand instead of assuming the listener knows them.
