An equipment maker's view of the changing power grid

The gist

Power Pulse is Hitachi Energy's podcast. In each episode, host Barbara Freitas-Daniels questions a guest, and several guests speak about the company's own products and strategy. Themed seasons cover grid automation, including communication networks, AI and bi-directional power flows, and high voltage, including the hard move away from SF6 insulation gas.

About Power Pulse

Power Pulse is Hitachi Energy's podcast, and it says so openly: each episode opens with a season introduction and closes with a credit naming the company. Barbara Freitas-Daniels hosts, putting questions to one guest at a time. Writers get credit for content and scripts, and Creative Chimps is credited with production and editing. Each season has a theme. One season is about grid automation, the digital technology meant to take hardware like transformers and circuit breakers further. In 'Grid Automation is Essential in the Age of Electricity', Massimo Daniele argues that a brain without the ability to sense and act is not much use. He also calls AI partly hype, though he says practical uses are already turning up across energy systems. Another guest says bi-directional power flows are hard to predict and very dynamic, as renewables, electric vehicles and distributed energy resources join the grid. When the host asks whether the company has much experience here, the answer is its own history in grid automation and communication standards. Software and services get their own episodes. Andy Howell says industrial companies go wrong when they write their own platforms for everything. His alternative is to partner with hyperscalers, borrow AI and analytics from other industries, and protect decades of industry-specific knowledge. Jamie Stapleton describes a business long built on selling transformers, breakers and switchgear that now wants to sell outcomes. Those outcomes include reliability, smoother substation operations, forecasts of events that could disrupt them, and availability guarantees on battery energy storage. The high voltage season turns to physical equipment and the rules that govern it. Its conversations keep coming back to SF6, an insulation gas the show calls trusted, reliable and nearly impossible to replace. In 'Rewriting the rulebook: Why SF6-free tech needs new rules', the guest explains how a new technology becomes a standard. Technical publications come first, followed by early standards work at bodies such as the International Council of Large Electrical Networks, whose technical brochures record the current state of a field. Partway through, the host stops to have that acronym spelled out, which keeps the specialist material easy to follow. 'An electric journey: How brilliant minds bring innovative tech' brings back Dr. Markus Heimbach, managing director of the High Voltage Products business unit, who was on the show's first episode, for what the host calls a wrap-up of the season. His argument is about the equipment's whole life cycle: once the gas's carbon footprint is removed, larger equipment running at higher pressure is at a disadvantage, and a compact design comes out ahead. Because several guests speak for the company, Power Pulse works best as a primary source, with a vendor explaining its strategy and technical reasoning in its own words.

Made for: Suits a listener who follows grid modernization closely and wants to hear people from one equipment maker explain automation, software, services and SF6-free high-voltage technology in their own words.

What sets it apart: It is a company podcast and doesn't hide it: guests from Hitachi Energy explain the firm's strategy, products and technical reasoning directly. That makes it a primary source on how one grid equipment maker thinks, not a neutral survey of the field.
