In their own words

The Battles of the First World War Podcast goes in-depth into the battles of the Great War of 1914-1918. The goal is to really go into the details of how and why these battles unfolded and happened as they did. In telling the narrative of these clashes we can revisit some of the stories of the men and women who lived, fought, and died during the first titanic struggle of the 20th Century, for these people have stories that deserve to be told.

Why you'd press play

You came for Verdun, stayed for road logistics and trench-photo gossip.

Press play if you want

  • Verdun explained through roads, morale, reserves, and the brutal math of not quitting
  • expert roundtables where a two-hour French Army conversation feels suspiciously like course credit

Talks about

Best episodes of Battles of the First World War Podcast

Short reviews from the PlayNext desk, based on the episodes we processed.

Angel Down: A Discussion with Daniel Kraus

A World War I conversation about new weapons, old tactics, and the machinery of violence.

The episode opens with Daniel Krauss and spends a fair stretch on his earlier work before Angel Down takes center stage. That setup includes Whalefall, The Shape of Water, Trollhunters, and his work with George A. Romero, so the book itself arrives a little later than expected.

Die Vergessene Schlacht - A Discussion with Alfons Philippi

A German historian turns the Meuse-Argonne into family history and a measured wartime path from farm to front.

The Meuse-Argonne gets a more personal treatment here: not American memory alone, but a German historian tracing the battle through family history, farm life, and a wartime path that runs from draft in February 1915 to Russia, Romania, Champagne, the Chemin des Dames,…

Great War Expo II at SGT Alvin C. York State Park in Tennessee

A grounded look at Sergeant Alvin C. York State Park as a preserved World War I site and host of Great War Expo II.

Great War Expo II presents Sergeant Alvin C. York State Park as more than a preserved landmark; it also works as a place for World War I interpretation.

"An Unladylike Profession" by Chris Dubbs - American Women War Correspondents in WW1

Women war correspondents are treated here as a real force in wartime reporting, not a footnote.

This episode treats women war correspondents as central to World War I journalism, not a side note. Chris Dubbs's An Unladylike Profession gives it structure, and the focus stays on how American women pushed into a field that was still largely closed to them, even with official…

Montreal to Courcelette via Paardeberg, a Discussion with Michel Gravel

A medal and an ID tag open a clear Black Watch story built on evidence.

Michel Gravel starts with a medal, an ID tag, and one named soldier, and the episode keeps its footing by following the objects instead of reaching for grand claims. It moves through the Black Watch story and the Canada-Scotland regimental links with a collector's patience.

Jake's Pilgrimage & Lost Battalion Tours

A pilgrimage to Clemory turns battlefield geography into family memory.

This monthly patron talk follows Jake Lamb into a very personal Meuse-Argonne pilgrimage. His stop in Clemory is framed as a return to the village where his father was wounded, and Clint Heacock comes across as a longtime friend and fellow podcaster who brings another steady…

Fighting the Kaiser's War: The Saxons in Flanders 1914/1918

A measured look at Saxons in Flanders that favors sources, place, and careful military history.

This conversation focuses on the Saxons in Flanders, but its real draw is the way it makes a war readable through sources, places, and selection.
