About For You The War Is Over

For You The War Is Over is a Second World War history podcast centered on prisoner-of-war escapes, especially RAF airmen whose operational lives led into captivity. Its stories begin before the wire. Dave and Tony spend time on childhood, family background, squadron postings, aircraft, training, sorties, crashes, and the routes by which men were taken prisoner. That groundwork matters. By the time an escape attempt begins, the listener understands the person as more than a name in a camp register. The Great Escape episodes show the series at its most focused. Cookie Long, Tony Bethell, Michael Casey, Sandy Gunn, Alfred Thompson, Bill Cameron, Cyril Swain, and Bob Stewart are treated through different kinds of evidence: records, escape reports, family recollections, interviews, private letters, and specialist research. The pacing is patient and research-led. A single episode can move from a Mustang skimming low over water to Stalag Luft tunnel logistics, or from photo reconnaissance over Norway to the environmental scars left by smoke generators around Tirpitz. The show likes practical detail. It explains why sand dispersal could be harder than digging, how civilian clothing and forged papers shaped an escape, and why language skills or lack of contacts changed a prisoner's chances. Camp life is not romanticized. Cold, hunger, monotony, malnutrition, transfers, surveillance, recapture, and execution remain part of the frame. Family guests add a different register, often filling in what official files cannot: a father's silence, a lifelong love of cars and planes, or the way a hospice carried a legacy forward. Researchers and guests also correct earlier accounts when new records surface, which gives the series a living archival quality. It is not a general World War II overview. It is narrower and more exacting than that. The show is best understood as biography under pressure, where aviation history, captivity, courage, improvisation, and loss meet in one life at a time. For listeners drawn to The Great Escape, RAF operations, prison camp systems, and the mechanics of survival, it offers a careful, humane record of men trying to get home.

Made for: Best for military history listeners who want detailed Second World War aviation stories, Great Escape context, and prisoner-of-war research grounded in records and family testimony.

What sets it apart: The show pairs escape mechanics with full-life biography, following captured airmen from squadron service into camp systems, failed plans, recapture, and legacy. Its strongest episodes combine archival detail with relatives and researchers who can correct or deepen the record.

In their own words

'For You The War Is Over' is a podcast all about the history of Second World War Prisoner-of-War escapes. First and foremost, these are true adventure stories; tales of human courage and endeavour. In each episode we look at a new POW escape and the story behind how they were captured, what their lives were like in the POW camps, and how they escaped. We also look at the lengths they went to in order to prepare for their escapes, and the challenges they faced and overcame in pursuit of their freedom. We therefore also try to look at who they were, what drove them, how their escape efforts reflected their personality, and what the individual’s character brought to their own unique escape ‘sty…
